Kitties in the loft

Posted in studio on March 26, 2009 by iconicblue

Domestic bliss. Does it get any better than this?

Kitten intermission from our evening Netflix fix. Pardon the unfinished ceiling… we haven’t done much fixing up in the loft yet.

Can you guess which is Finchy and which is Robin?

Robin does NOT like help

Posted in Uncategorized on March 25, 2009 by iconicblue

It’s been all finchy the past few posts, so it’s time for some Robin time.

Robin likes to do things himself. He doesn’t want to be cuddled. He slinks away from your hand 9 times out of 10 when you pet him even though he doesn’t quite run away. He will push you away and try to scurry over and down your back when you pick him up (most of the time). He’s like an oiled weasel. However, make no mistake. In the evening, it’s play with Robin time. If you don’t, he’ll spend hours meowing piteously at you, looking at you, and resorting to shredding and knocking down anything he can reach on the office shelves to get our attention. Hey, stop that you crazy cat! Ooooh, whatcha gonna do, come chase me? (Yeah! It worked!)

Hopefully he’ll settle down when his metabolism slows down. Until then, here’s one from the archives. Robin and his 14 inch tail.

Finchy likes help

Posted in Things you can do to Finchy on March 25, 2009 by iconicblue

Finchy is very curious. He loves to check things out, and he always lets you know when he wants you to pick him up and show him something. He likes help getting down the loft stairs – he will even wait on a little ledge we built for when they were tiny kittens, for us to come get him and carry him down a few feet. Before he would step onto your hand so you could lift him down one handed. Now he’s developed into wanting to climb over your shoulder. He has a well-established vocabulary of questioning mews, so you can always tell what he wants.

“Time to get up, I want the window open so I can look at birds”

“Help me down the ladder”

“Hey, I’m down here, at your feet, pet me”

“I’m going to climb up you now, here I come!”

“I want to play with whirley bird, come get it out of the cabinet!”

Here he is checking out the loft structure, from below:

Finchy in the loft

Posted in studio on March 24, 2009 by iconicblue

He’s our darlin’. He loves to watch everything. He’s a voyeur, not a participant.

And he loves to be petted. Here he’s looking more closely at the camera. Or is he trying to climb on my shoulder?

Kittens growing up

Posted in Uncategorized on March 11, 2009 by iconicblue

We periodically bring R&F to the pet store (Mud Bay here in Seattle) and make use of their bulk food scales to unofficially weigh the cats. We estimate that they were born the first of June, or end of May, so 2 weeks ago, at age 9 months, they weighed about 12 1/2 lbs each. Finchy, the runt of the litter, is finally outstripping his much much more athletic and high-metabolism brother, and now weighs more than Robin. Before now Robin had outweighed Finchy by .25 lbs every time – all that hardbody cat muscle.

Finchy has the best, softest schmoo around. He’s definitely half chinchilla.

Now one additional note about our place – it lacks much access to sunlight. I have this ginormous light table that we have started leaving on during the day for the cats to sun themselves on, which they do quite often. I think they light the extra light. They can often be found underneth the little lamp by our bed as well, when it gets left on.

Lately, Robin has started getting freckles on his nose. We did some research and found out that tabby cats in particular are partial to getting nose freckles, something I did not know! They also have whiskers that are turning black. They each have 4 or 5, and they each have them only on one side of their muzzles. How odd!

And from the archive, here’s one of Finchy at Mud Bay. He *loves* to be on the cat towers. In fact, he’ll whine loudly when he doesn’t get to stay on them.

Outing at the beach

Posted in outside with tags , on March 10, 2009 by iconicblue

This is from 2 months ago. Finchy does indeed like to have outings in the great big outside world. As long as they are protected and have shrubbery and trees around to hide in.

Robin is more adventurous. He’s not afraid to explore:
